Here’s What Happened At the Main Street Mural Community Workshops

Recently, we hosted the first two Main Street Mural Community workshops to get input on the mural’s design. Our final workshop is coming up on April 18th. The workshops are free, and we’d love to see you there!

One of the things we were most excited about when we launched the Main Street Mural project was bringing our neighbors together to envision and create a lasting work of public art that reflects the resilience, compassion, and strength of our community.

In February and March, we were thrilled to welcome members of our community – including Katherine Gotsick from the Main Dempster Mile, as well as mural artists Oscar JoyoXavier Wynn, and Edwige Massart – into the studio for an afternoon of art making and connection.

Oscar Joyo and Xavier Wynn connect during the March 21st workshop.

At each workshop, we kicked things off by walking everyone through the Open Studio process, then jumped right in with setting intentions.

During the art-making portion of the workshop, we hung large sheets of paper on the wall with outlines of the mural, and invited people to fill them in with their artwork. Some workshop participants chose to draw, while others made mixed-media collages.

Afterward, participants were invited to share their artwork and their process with the group.

Throughout the workshop, themes of welcome, community, and story emerged.

By the end of each workshop, the studio was buzzing with energy and excitement. Our last workshop is on April 18th. We’d love to see you there!
