Facilitators

Janet Beals
Janet Beals was Board President of the Open Studio and has been involved in both doing and facilitating the process since 1995. In her "other life," Janet is the Chief Development Officer for the Gads Hill Center, a 100-year-old family support center focusing on the Latino population in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. Janet has used the process to help her with critical life decisions such as buying a house, getting married, planning a wedding, creating a blended family, and changing careers.

Cal Calvird
Originally from Michigan, Cal moved to Chicago in 1991 and apprenticed to a local glass artist. Today, Cal makes and exhibits his art, enjoys teaching a variety of glass blowing workshops, and maintains a studio in West Rogers Park where he lives with his partner Lon.

Jan Ellenstein
Jan has been making art fun for children (including her own) for the last 30 years as well as organizing Arts Festivals for children including Evanston's own Ethnic Arts Festival and First Night.

Erin Mooney
Erin has been a participant and facilitator at the Open Studio for three years and facilitates classes at all levels. She is a student at The Adler School of Professional Psychology in the Masters in Counseling Psychology, Art Therapy program. She found out about the studio through a friend’s recommendation when she was considering a career change in 2003. Her artistic back ground began with her first creative passion, photography. After coming to the Open Studio she developed a penchant for collage and painting.

Barbara Goldberg
Barbara Goldberg discovered Open Studio Project when it first came to Evanston and, upon reading its mission, knew it was where she belonged. She has an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Involved in the arts for over 30 years, she has worked with all levels. At the Art Institute of Chicago, she wrote teacher manuals, ran workshops, and helped teachers integrate art into their classrooms. She has worked with women and children at a shelter for battered women using art and writing as a means of expression. Her artwork has been exhibited in numerous art galleries in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Susette Payne
Susette has been a participant and facilitator at the Open Studio for five years and is the current board president. She has a Bachelor of Arts in dance and choreography from Mills College, California, and is the mother of five adult children. After studying Jung's writing and Jungian dream work at the Jung Institute in Evanston, she is currently enrolled in Arnold Mindell's School of Process Oriented Therapy.

Karla Rindal
Karla was profoundly ill in 1996 when she stumbled upon the book, Art is a Way of Knowing by OSP co-founder Pat Allen. She has been an OSP participant ever since and credits the process for much of her healing. Intention setting, artmaking, and witness writing have all become important elements of her spiritual practice. Karla is also a board member, facilitates groups at all levels, and has a special love for found object sculpture. She earns her living as a tutor, writing teacher, and free-lance editor.
